Not all hauntings are human. Some arrive with a spectral purr. Throughout history, people have viewed cats as omens and protectors. Ghostly cats appear in haunted lore, wandering through historic inns and eerie lighthouses. These cats continue to roam long after their nine lives end.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse – Buxton, North Carolina – The Ghostly Guardian Cat

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is famous for guiding sailors through treacherous waters, but it also has a more elusive resident, a ghostly black and white cat. Visitors often spot it wandering the grounds or inside the lighthouse, rubbing against their legs in a friendly greeting.

But when they reach down to pick it up, the cat vanishes into thin air. Believed to have once belonged to a lighthouse keeper, this spectral companion has been keeping watch for decades, ensuring that even in the afterlife, it never leaves its post.

Morton Hotel – Grand Rapids, Michigan – A Mystery Yet to Be Uncovered

I first heard about the Morton Hotel’s ghost cat from Tours Around Michigan, but the full story remains elusive. Guests and staff have reported strange sightings of a spectral cat roaming the hotel.

Lizzie Borden B&B – Fall River, Massachusetts

The infamous Lizzie Borden House is no stranger to paranormal activity, but some of its spirits walk on four legs. Guests staying in the second and third-floor bedrooms have reported hearing disembodied meows echoing through the halls, despite no living cat being present.

Others have felt the unmistakable sensation of a cat brushing against their legs or curling up at the foot of the bed, only to find nothing there. Whether a remnant of a long-lost pet or something stranger, this ghost cat seems to have made the Borden house its eternal home.

The Crescent Hotel – Eureka Springs, Arkansas

The Crescent Hotel is home to many spirits, but few are as beloved as Morris, the hotel’s former guardian mouser. Though he passed away years ago, guests still report feeling a cat brushing against their legs, especially near his tribute in the lobby.

Paranormal investigators have even captured the sound of a gentle purr on audio recordings. Whether he’s making his rounds or simply enjoying his forever home, Morris proves that at America’s Most Haunted Hotel, not all ghosts walk on two legs.

Tokeland Hotel – Tokeland, Washington – The Phantom Bedside Visitor

Washington’s oldest hotel has no shortage of ghostly tales, and among its spectral residents is an unseen furry companion. Guests at the Tokeland Hotel often report the sensation of a cat jumping onto their bed and walking around their feet, except no living cat is anywhere to be found. Whether a lingering spirit from the hotel’s past or something drawn to its historic charm, this ghostly cat ensures that visitors never truly sleep alone.

Marriott Plaza San Antonio – San Antonio, Texas – The Lady and Her Ghostly Cat

Among the many spirits said to haunt the Marriott Plaza San Antonio, one of the most unsettling is the Lady, a grieving widow who, legend says, took her own life along with that of her beloved cat. Though she is often seen wandering the grounds in a flowing white gown, those who encounter her say she is never alone.

Guests and staff have reported seeing the spectral figure cradling a cat in her arms, gently stroking its head. Others have witnessed unexplained activity, like lights flickering or drawers opening on their own, as if an unseen presence still lingers. Whether in the basement’s employee-only areas, the upper floors, or the shadowy garden, the Lady and her ghostly cat remind visitors that some bonds are not broken, even in death.

Fort McAllister – Savannah, Georgia – The Phantom Mascot

During the Civil War, Fort McAllister’s defenders found comfort in a coal-black cat named Tom Cat, their fearless mascot. He dodged musket fire and cannon blasts, but his luck ran out in 1863 when he fell in battle.

The war ended long ago, but visitors still see a black cat dart along the ramparts or linger in bombproof rooms. Some feel the brush of an unseen feline against their legs. Park staff insist no living cats reside there. Many wonder if Tom Cat still stands guard, forever loyal to his post.

Fairport Harbor Lighthouse – Fairport Harbor, Ohio – Sentinel, the Ghost Cat

In life, a gray cat watched over the Fairport Harbor Lighthouse, remaining long after the lighthouse keeper’s wife had passed. Years later, museum curator Pam Brent glimpsed a ghost cat darting through the halls. More than once she felt an unseen cat settle onto her bed.

Workers installing air conditioning uncovered a mummified gray cat hidden deep in the basement crawl space, solving the mystery. Even in death, Sentinel roams the lighthouse, a loyal guardian refusing to leave its post.

Carriage House Apartments – Jacksonville, Florida – The Phantom White Cat

Chelsea Courtyards, once the Carriage House Apartments, has a long history of paranormal activity. Some say Apartment 40 sat vacant for years due to violent poltergeist activity. Others insist the true hauntings occurred in Apartment 42. Residents have reported seeing a ghostly white cat slipping through the complex, as if searching for something lost.

Residents have encountered the kindly spirit of Billie Boyd, a former staff member who died in 1987. Many have also reported strange occurrences linked to a tragic fire in Apartment 20. Whether the phantom cat is tied to these spirits or remains for its own reasons, one thing is certain. It refuses to be forgotten.

Cumberland University Library – Lebanon, Tennessee – The Gliding Ghost Cat

Libraries often hold spirits of the past, and Cumberland University Library has one of the most elusive. Library director Jon Boniol saw a phantom cat glide silently across the floor before vanishing behind a stack of boxes. This spooky visitor had no visible legs or paws and moved smoothly through the air, untethered to the ground.

A playful young girl’s spirit lingers near the circulation desk, but the ghostly cat always steals the show. For more eerie tales, I recommend Notebook of Ghosts, one of my favorite blogs for haunted stories.

The William Phelps General Store holds echoes of the past, where unseen presences linger among the artifacts of another era. Visitors have heard whispers, footsteps, and felt ghostly touches, but some have also encountered a more elusive spirit. A black cat has been seen weaving through the store, slipping past doorways and vanishing up the stairs.

When people try to follow, the cat vanishes. It may be a former pet or a lingering guardian of the store. This spectral feline remains one of Palmyra’s most mysterious hauntings.

The Biltmore Estate – Ashville, North Carolina – The Headless Ghost Cat

Ghostly whispers, shadowy figures, and eerie sensations fill the grand halls of the Biltmore Estate. Yet, one of its most unsettling apparitions roams the gardens. Visitors report seeing a headless orange cat wandering the grounds before vanishing into the night.

Motion sensors detect movement where no living creature should be. Those who knew Simon best believe he has returned home to watch over the place he loved.

The historic Cosmopolitan Hotel is home to many spectral residents, but one of its most charming haunts walks on four paws. Guests and staff have reported seeing a ghostly cat roaming the halls, slipping silently through doorways before vanishing into thin air.

Unlike the mischievous spirits of Room 11 or the elegant Lady in Red, this feline apparition seems content to playfully wander its old stomping grounds, a harmless and ever-curious presence in one of San Diego’s most haunted hotels.

Hotel Vendome – Prescott, Arizona – The Playful Spirit of Noble the Cat

Room 16 of the Hotel Vendome isn’t just haunted by the sorrowful spirit of Abby Byr, it’s also home to her beloved cat, Noble.
